The movie that turned Macaulay Culkin into a household name and made every kid hope that two bumbling burglars would try to come into their home so they could spring some traps on them! Once upon a time, James Gunn was fired by Marvel, hired by DC and then re-hired by Marvel. Who else could direct a Guardians of the Galaxy movie? It's hard to imagine someone else filling his shoes and I suppose Marvel thought the same thing. Following the events of Endgame and the Disney+ Christmas special, our Guardians find themselves racing to save a vital member of their crew and coming head to head with The High Evolutionary. And Adam Warlock. And The High Evolutionary's mad scientist creations (War Pig!). Delayed due to the Covid pandemic, Shang-Chi was pushed back from its original release date in 2020 to 2021. Marvel's first superhero of Asian descent was met with critical praise (and audiences loved it, too) and ushered in Phase Four (although technically Phase Four started with WandaVision, Black Widow was the first feature film but since it's a prequel...). Who are the Men in Black? Why, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, of course! Based on the comic by Lowell Cunningham, director Barry Sonnenfeld brought the Men in Black to life and it was a huge hit, cementing Will Smith as a bona fide movie star! Also starring Vincent D'onofrio and Linda Fiorentino, the Men in Black are a super top secret government agency that monitors and polices alien activity on earth. Hijinks ensue. The podcast is officially ten years old. Can you believe it?? And sure, we may have missed, um, a year (or two) here and there, but still! John and Justin's first episode was Man of Steel released on July 19, 2013. So we thought it would be fun to revisit the film that started it all. And to top it off, John was able to join us for this episode! We had a blast recording this one and we hope you all enjoy it. After the abysmal X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the next solo Wolverine takes a step in the right direction. With director James Mangold (Logan, Ford vs Ferrari) at the helm, this film follows Logan to Japan, which is something the fans had been longing to see. Released just prior to The Dark Knight, Batman: Gotham Knight was advertised as a bridge connecting the new movie to Batman Begins. At a brisk 74 minutes, this film is actually six short films strung together with different animation styles, writers and directors. It's an interesting installment of the DC animated lineup. Oh, did I mention Kevin Conroy voices Batman? That's reason enough to watch it! |

We've finally gotten around to reviewing the second movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Better late than never, right? Released in 2008, The Incredible Hulk was released shortly after Iron Man and was moderately succesful. Starring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner (who would later be replaced by Mark Ruffalo), this is the only solo Incredible Hulk film in the MCU as of 2023. Do you like The Incredible Hulk? In Marvel's Phase Three, a few new characters were introduced including Doctor Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme. To mainstream audiences, he was a fairly unknown character, similar to the Guardians of the Galaxy, which was a huge hit. Doctor Strange was released in November of 2016 and looked like a superhero version of Inception or The Matrix. Despite a little controversy over the casting of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, what we got was a solid entry in the MCU and a great introduction to Stephen Strange. It also made Keira Knightly a star and a household name and proved to everyone that you could, in fact, make a good movie based on a silly Disney ride. I suppose it's a bit of a stretch to say Chronicle is a "superhero movie" but it's definitely inspired by comic books and superheroes. Josh Trank's film focuses on three teenagers who are given superpowers and how they each respond to their "great power." It's a found footage movie, which works for the most part, but can be distracting at times (as far as found footage movies go, this one is near the top of the list though). It's a short, tight film that asks some big questions. What do you think of Chronicle? |

Based on the iconic graphic novel by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, Bryan Cranston plays Commissioner Gordon and Ben McKenzie is The Dark Knight in his first year of crime fighting as the Caped Crusader. Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer took a lot of inspiration from the graphic novel for Batman Begins and you can definitely see it when watching this movie. A great adaptation and a really well-done animated film. What do you think about Batman: Year One?

In 2007, Michael Bay delivered the long awaited live-action Transformers movie. Differing from the TV show and animated movie, this film is centered around a human teenager buying his first car and trying to hit on the hot, popular girl in school. He just also happens to be the descendant of an explorer who stumbled upon the frozen remains of Megatron. The map to the All-Spark (the cube that gives Autobots and Decepticons life) was imprinted on the explorer's glasses, which the teenage boy now possesses. So the Decepticons are after him and the Autobots must protect him (and the All-Spark). Do fans of Transformers like this movie? What about just regular movie fans? Probably most famous for being the last film of Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, The Crow is a dark tale of vengeance directed by Alex Proyas. Despite Lee's on-set death, the film was finished and released and is considered by some to be a brilliant comic adaptation. It was received well by critics and audiences alike with most reviews praising Lee's performance. So how does the film hold up nearly 30 years later? In the 80's, Transformers were huge. The toys were amazing and the TV show was a hit. So the next logical step: give them their own movie! Released in 1986, Transformers ended up being a box office disappointment and sparked some controversy over one character's death. Universal Studios decided it wasn't done with Isla Nublar or Jurassic Park and hired director Colin Trevorrow to helm the franchise's fourth film. Although this sequel ignores parts 2 and 3 and is considered a soft reboot, whatever that means. This time around we've got a whole new cast of characters. In fact, we've got whole new dinosaurs, including one that was genetically engineered: The Indominus Rex. Was this sequel necessary? Is it any good? Once it was released it was met with a cold reception and the movie was considered a failure.
